Capsule vs Convertible vs Rotating Car Seat: Which One Does Your Baby Need?
Share
Choosing your baby's first car seat is one of the biggest decisions before the due date, and the names don't make it easy. Capsule, convertible, rotating, i-Size, ISOFIX... what does it all mean, and which one do you actually need?
Here's a guide to the three main types of car seat for babies, so you can pick the one that suits your family and car.
First, the rules in New Zealand
Under the Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004, children under 7 must be restrained in an approved child restraint that is appropriate for their age and size. Children aged 7 must use an approved child restraint if one is available in the vehicle.
An approved child restraint carries the mark of one of these standards:
- AS/NZS 1754 (Australian/New Zealand standard)
- ECE R44/04 or UN R129 (i-Size) (European standards, shown with an "E" in a circle)
- FMVSS 213 (US standard), with the New Zealand "S" mark
1. Baby capsule (infant car seat)
A capsule is a small, rear-facing seat made just for newborns and young babies. It has a carry handle, so you can lift baby in and out of the car without unbuckling them, and many capsules click straight onto a pram frame, which we would call a travel system.
How long it lasts: until your baby reaches the weight or height limit in the capsule's instructions. Our Stridex capsule is for newborns up to 13kg.
Good for:
- Moving a sleeping baby from the car to the pram without waking them
- Parents who are in and out of the car a lot
- Smaller cars, since capsules take up less room
Keep in mind: your baby will outgrow it, so you'll need a second seat after that. Always follow the use and time guidance in your capsule's instruction manual.
What is a capsule base?
A capsule base is a separate part that stays fitted in your car. Once it's installed, the capsule simply clicks in and out of it, so you don't need to strap the capsule in with the seatbelt every time.
A base is optional but nice to have. The capsule can also be installed using your car's seatbelt on its own. For our Stridex capsule, we offer a seatbelt base or an ISOFIX base.
2. Convertible car seat
A convertible car seat starts rear facing for newborns, then turns around to forward facing when your child is old enough. It stays installed in the car, so you cannot carry it around.
How long it lasts: until your child reaches the weight or height limit in the seat's instructions. Our Vesta is approved for 0–18kg (newborn to about 4 years).
Good for:
- Families who want one seat from day one instead of buying a capsule first
- Better value over time
- Keeping your child rear facing for longer
Keep in mind: it's bulkier than a capsule and stays in the car, so a sleeping baby has to come out of the seat.
Our pick: the Vesta convertible car seat (newborn to 4 years, 0–18kg) installs with your car's seatbelt, so it fits any car. A lever switches it from rear facing to forward facing.
3. Rotating car seat (360°)
A rotating car seat is a convertible seat that spins on its base to face the car door. You turn it towards you, put your child in, buckle them up, then turn it back into the travel position.
How long it lasts: until your child reaches the weight or height limit in the seat's instructions. Our Orbit is approved for 40–150cm, from newborn to 12 years.
Good for:
- Parents recovering from a C-section or with a sore back
- Smaller cars or tight car parks where getting baby in is awkward
- Families who want to buy one seat and be done
Keep in mind: rotating seats are usually ISOFIX, so check that your car has ISOFIX points (see below). They're also heavier and cost more than a basic convertible seat.
Our pick: the Orbit 360° rotating car seat is R129 i-Size certified, installs with ISOFIX and a top tether, and grows with your child from newborn to 12 years (40–150cm).
What is ISOFIX?
ISOFIX is an international standard (ISO 13216) for fitting a car seat directly to your car. Cars with ISOFIX have two metal anchor points built into the gap between the back seat's backrest and cushion. An ISOFIX car seat or base clicks onto these points, so you don't need to use the seatbelt to hold it in place.
Many ISOFIX seats also have a top tether strap or a support leg. If your seat has one, it must be used as the instructions describe.
Does my car have ISOFIX? Check your car's owner's manual, or look for ISOFIX labels or the metal anchor points between the back seat cushion and backrest. If your car doesn't have ISOFIX, choose a seat that installs with the seatbelt, like our Vesta or Harness Booster.

| Capsule | Convertible | Rotating (360°) | |

| Direction | Rear facing only | Rear, then forward | Rear, then forward |
| Carry baby in it | Yes | No | No |
| Clicks onto a pram | Often | No | No |
| Easy to get baby in and out | Yes | Okay | Easiest |
| Installation | Seatbelt or base | Usually seatbelt | Usually ISOFIX |
| Arête option | Stridex 3-in-1 | Vesta | Orbit 360° |
So which one should you choose?
- Want to carry baby to the pram without waking them? Start with a capsule as part of a travel system, then move to a convertible or rotating seat when baby reaches the capsule's weight or height limit.
- Want one seat that lasts and fits any car? Go for a convertible seat that installs with the seatbelt.
- Have ISOFIX and want the easiest seat to use every day and will last? A rotating seat is worth it, especially in the first few months after birth.
Plenty of families use a capsule and a convertible or rotating seat: the capsule for the newborn months, then the bigger seat once baby outgrows it.
What comes after?
When your child reaches the weight or height limit of their convertible seat, they move up to a booster seat. By law, children must use an approved child restraint until their 7th birthday, and until their 8th birthday if one is available in the vehicle. See our Aegis i-Size booster (ISOFIX) and Harness Booster (seatbelt).
